Miguel Espinoza has been interested in art his entire life. He began drawing and painting at a young age and has always been inspired by color in nature and how it affects the human psyche. Using various media, he paints from life and photographs to extract expressive shapes and colors. His work is not overly concerned with exact representation but rather composition and balance. He prefers to paint large scale canvases to draw the viewer into the work.
He graduated with honors and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He has done commission artwork for friends and family and has exhibited at Long Beach and Windward Community Colleges, University of Hawaii, and was selected to participate in a traveling exhibit in Columbia, South America. In DC, his work was exhibited at the Philips Collection Staff Show and Art-O-Matic.
He was assistant Preparator at the Contemporary Museum in Makiki Heights in Oahu, Hawaii and coordinated College Art 1990. He was a Museum Assistant at the Phillips Collection and a volunteer at the Smithsonian American Arts Museum.
Miguel uses many different mediums in his abstract art such as acrylics, gouaches, graphite pencil, charcoal, oils and pastels. He enjoys incorporating patterns in some of his works to create fresh and interesting images and compositions. He believes that working in a single medium is restrictive to his artistic process. Each idea manifests in its own individual style.

There are many things that inspire my paintings, daily walks, news events, or just looking out the window and seeing a stunning sunrise or sunset. I enjoy listening to a variety of music, seeing great cinematography as well as other artists work to get inspiration. Many of my pieces are directly influenced by these experiences. I love recreating people, sunsets, plants and wildlife in my work. I look at light source and what it does to the surrounding areas, objects and people. I look at shadows and reflected light, lines and atmosphere to create a sense of depth and perspective.

This work was commissioned by a DC art collector for his new home foyer. He specifically wanted a 36" x 60" charcoal and graphite drawing of Statue of Freedom. The work took 45 days to complete but the end result was quite rewarding.
As an artist, I never saw myself painting flowers. But I'm glad my attitude changed because it is truly enjoyable. I hope you agree.
I made this time-lapsed video of me painting an amaryllis in the early Spring this year. Enjoy!
I tried to depict an old sage. My mother whom will turn ninety-five this year.
